On October 28, 2026, this outlet learned that on October 26, 2026, Gongpo Gyi, the sister of Tibetan private entrepreneur Dorje Tashi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Chinese Communist authorities on trumped-up charges, once again went to the entrance of the Tibet High Court to seek justice and defend her brother’s rights. The family maintains that Dorje Tashi is innocent and has made two demands: allow the lawyer to review the case files, and require the court to initiate a procedure to correct the wrongful ruling.

In a video, Gongpo Gyi’s husband, Chejiang, said: “The Tibet High Court has not responded to our two demands in accordance with national law, so we are here. Gongpo Gyi was beaten and is covered in injuries. They have deployed police to try to arrest us.”

Dorje Tashi, a well-known Tibetan entrepreneur, was arrested in July 2008 and later sentenced to life imprisonment by the authorities on trumped-up charges. He has now been imprisoned for more than 18 years. For years, his family has petitioned and protested outside the Tibet Autonomous Region High Court, claiming his innocence. The regional prison authorities deprived Dorje Tashi’s family of visitation rights for six years, and recently also revoked visitation rights for the lawyer representing his appeal.

Biography of Dorje Tashi: Male, born October 25, 1973, Tibetan, from Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province. Former deputy to the 11th People’s Congress of Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region; president of Tibet Shenhu Group; chairman of Tibet Shenhu Industrial Development Co., Ltd.; and executive director of Tibet Shigatse Oasis Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. On July 11, 2008, he was criminally detained by the Lhasa Public Security Bureau on suspicion of financing criminal activities endangering national security. On August 19 of the same year, he was arrested with the approval of the Lhasa Procuratorate on suspicion of bribery. On June 3, 2009, the Lhasa Procuratorate indicted him on charges of loan fraud. On May 17, 2010, the Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to life imprisonment at first instance on charges of loan fraud. The petitioner disagreed and appealed on the grounds of innocence. On July 26, 2010, the Tibet Autonomous Region High People’s Court issued its second-instance ruling, rejecting the appeal and upholding the original sentence. He is currently detained at Qushui Prison in Lhasa.
