Urgent Attention: Jiangxi Human Rights Defender Zhu Yufang Taken Away by Beijing Fangshan District Police

((Rights Defense Network Information Center report))On September 17, 2026,this outlet learned:in mid-September 2026,while Jiangxi human rights defender Zhu Yufang was in Beijing visiting friends,at 3 a.m. on September 17,Beijing Fangshan District police broke into her friend’s home,took her away,and her current situation is unknown。

Profile of Zhu Yufang:Zhu Yufang is a forced-demolition rights defender from Pingxiang, Jiangxi。She was formerly a private business owner who operated four shops,During a demolition in 2006,a real estate company established by relatives of senior Pingxiang municipal government officials refused to honor the demolition agreement,forcing Zhu Yufang to embark on the path of rights defense。In the course of defending her rights,she not only defended her own rights,but also actively helped others defend theirs,and called for social justice,As a result,she was regarded by the local government as a key target for stability-maintenance control and suppression,and was intercepted and abducted multiple times、held in black jails、and subjected to torture。In 2015,Zhu Yufang was taken away by Beijing police for defending her rights in Beijing while wearing a T-shirt bearing the words “There would be no petitioners without corruption”,transferred to the police of Anyuan District, Pingxiang, Jiangxi, who placed her under criminal detention on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”,and was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison by the Anyuan District Court of Pingxiang City for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”。

After being released from prison in 2018,Zhu Yufang continued to petition over her wrongful conviction due to judicial misconduct;on December 3, 2021,she went to the Jiangxi Provincial High Court to petition,was refused,and then held up a sign outside the court calling for justice;one week later, on December 10, 2021 (World Human Rights Day),Zhu Yufang was arrested by Pingxiang police,and was immediately placed under criminal detention on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”。On August 6, 2022,Zhu Yufang was sentenced for a second time by the Anyuan District Court of Pingxiang City for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”,this time to a longer sentence than the previous one——four years。Following an appeal,the Pingxiang Intermediate Court upheld the original judgment on second instance。

While serving her sentence at Jiangxi Women’s Prison,Zhu Yufang was subjected to torture and abuse,and her physical illnesses went without timely and effective treatment for a prolonged period,but prison authorities refused to allow her medical parole。She was released from prison after completing her sentence on December 10, 2025。
