On October 3, 2026, this outlet learned of the case details and profile of Hong Guangyu, a former Beijing Science and Technology News reporter and media professional who was detained on criminal charges. The information is now reported as follows:
Hong Guangyu: Media professional. Former reporter for Beijing Science and Technology News, long focused on food safety, and wrote a large number of science education articles.
Around 2022, after at least eight cherry growers in Dalian used agricultural supplies sold by Dalian Dianlong Agricultural Supplies Sales Co., Ltd. (Kuaishou account “Cherry Sister”), cherry trees died over a large area, affecting approximately 1,630 mu. A judicial appraisal found that the losses exceeded 50 million yuan, and some orchards remain abandoned to this day. The growers then continued to seek redress, and the media called the case the “Dalian Cherry Growers’ Agricultural Supplies Rights Protection Case.”
Hong Guangyu has consistently spoken out for the growers in the Dalian cherry rights protection case. Starting in late August 2026, Dalian police successively arrested dozens of people, including growers, anti-counterfeiting bloggers, lawyers, assistants and media professionals, on charges including picking quarrels and provoking trouble and extortion. Hong Guangyu was one of them. On September 18, 2026, Hong Guangyu was taken away by Dalian police in Xiamen. Dalian police then placed him in criminal detention on suspicion of the “crime of picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” He is currently being held at the Dalian Detention Center.
