((Reported by the Rights Defense Network Information Center))On September 19, 2026, this website learned: Human rights defender Huang Xueqin, who was sentenced to five years, completed her sentence yesterday, September 18, 2026, and there has not yet been any news of her arriving home。

Huang Xueqin: female, born in 1988, from Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, independent feminist journalist, former investigative reporter for Xin Kuai Bao and Southern Metropolis Weekly, a关注者 of issues including gender、 equality、 official corruption、 corporate pollution and disadvantaged groups, an important supporter of and reporter on #MeToo cases in mainland China, a supporter of and helper to victims of sexual assault/sexual harassment, feminist activist, and a political prisoner once held by China。

Since 2018, the first year of #MeToo in mainland China, because she had been actively involved in the feminist and #MeToo movements, and had assisted many women in reporting sexual assault and sexual abuse cases online, she was subjected to stability-maintenance surveillance by the Guangdong authorities; in June 2019, after going to Hong Kong to participate in the “anti-extradition” protest marches, and subsequently writing an article publicly sharing her feelings, she was extremely angry at the Hong Kong government’s hard-line attitude toward its harsh treatment of peaceful demonstrators, and was subsequently deprived of her passport and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao by Guangzhou police; on October 17 of the same year, for the same reason, she was criminally detained by Guangzhou police on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”, and was later placed under residential surveillance at a designated location, until she was released on bail on January 17, 2020; on September 19, 2021, after successfully receiving support from a Chevening Scholarship and being due to travel the following day to the University of Sussex to study for a master’s degree in gender and development, she suddenly lost contact together with the public-interest advocate Wang Jianbing, who had come to see her off, and it was later learned that both had been detained by Guangzhou police on suspicion of “inciting subversion of state power” on the grounds that they had “repeatedly invited friends to gather at Wang Jianbing’s home, and the two may have engaged in words or conduct suspected of organizing discussions concerning current political affairs」 and were later placed under residential surveillance at a designated location on the same charge; in October 2021, she was formally arrested by Guangzhou police on the same charge, and was held at the Guangzhou No. 1 Detention Center; because the characters 「snow、soldier」 in their names, Huang Xueqin and Wang Jianbing, are homophones of 「snow cake」, supporters therefore also referred to their case as the 「Snow Cake」 case, and established a 「Snow Cake Case」 page on social media to follow and spread information about the case in a timely manner; on September 22, 2023, after two years, their case finally went to trial at the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court, and on June 14, 2024, the court pronounced first-instance verdicts in the two cases on the same day for the charge of 「inciting subversion of state power」: she was sentenced to five years in prison, deprived of political rights for four years, and had 100,000 yuan in personal property confiscated; Wang Jianbing was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, deprived of political rights for three years, and had 50,000 yuan in personal property confiscated; dissatisfied with the verdicts, both appealed; on September 12 of the same year, following a second-instance ruling by the Guangdong High Court, her original sentence was upheld; during the period of residential surveillance at a designated location, she was subjected to torture to extract confessions and prolonged fatigue interrogations, as well as other inhumane treatment, resulting in severe physical harm and physiological disorders; on September 18, 2026, she completed her sentence and was released。

She had previously served her sentence at the Guangdong Women’s Prison(No. 52 Guangcong Fourth Road, Baiyun District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Postal code:510545).
