Qin Weijin, a lawyer from Liuzhou, Guangxi, was criminally detained by the Liujiang Branch of the Liuzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau on March 15, 2024, on the charge of “inciting ethnic hatred and ethnic discrimination.” Qin Weijin was subsequently formally arrested and prosecuted, finally being sentenced to 2 years and 6 months on May 25, 2025, for picking quarrels and provoking trouble.
Qin Weijin: Director of Guangxi Qintong Law Firm, born in 1962, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law from a university in 1985, and was a teacher at the National Court Cadres’ Spare-Time Law University. He previously worked in the economic, civil, criminal and juvenile divisions of a court, serving as a judge and presiding judge, before becoming a full-time lawyer. After the Chinese Communist authorities’ “709 incident” crackdown on human rights lawyers in 2015, criminal defense lawyers faced immense difficulties. Qin Weijin repeatedly voiced support for other criminal defense lawyers who had been treated unjustly. For example, in 2016, he participated in a joint statement of support concerning the “incident in which Guangxi lawyer Wu Liangshu was beaten by court bailiffs after being unable to file a case at the Qingxiu District Court in Nanning,” the “case in which Sichuan lawyers Zhan Zhaocheng and Liu Xun were accused of obstructing testimony,” and the 2018 “incident involving the revocation of the license of Guangdong rights-defense lawyer Sui Muqing.”
