Li Qiaochu: Day 463 of Our Marriage Application, Third Visit to Lunan Prison
These days I have been physically and emotionally exhausted, but I still came here with my older sister. Standing here at the entrance to the visiting room at Lunan Prison means I can be a little closer to him, I suppose. I brought paper and a pen and drew a picture on site to suit the occasion.
The marriage applications and applications for special visits concerning marriage registration that I submitted several times previously have all received no response. I have also raised the matter through channels at the procuratorate and the prison administration bureau.
The Shandong Provincial Prison Administration Bureau has recently been actively responding to the new Prison Law, which is due to be implemented in November, by presenting a series of cases on CCTV-12’s Inside and Outside the High Walls. They all explain how prisons across Shandong help incarcerated people maintain family ties and demonstrate a humane approach. So when will that humane approach extend to us? More importantly—when will our basic civil rights be legally protected?

On September 21, 2026, the outlet reported that Ya’an rights defender Chen Mingyan, released on August 10 after completing a four-and-a-half-year sentence for “provoking trouble,” had filed real-name complaints against Yucheng District authorities, alleging abuse of power, legal violations, falsification and false accusations. Chen, born September 9, 1976, had previously served four years for “using a cult organization to undermine the implementation of state law.”

Human rights lawyer Xie Yang was sentenced by the Changsha Intermediate People’s Court on March 23, 2026, to five years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power,” with 100,000 yuan in property confiscated. The sentence was reportedly based on WeChat comments and runs until January 10, 2027. Xie abandoned his appeal and was transferred to Chishan Prison in Hunan Province on May 20, 2026.

Former 1989 student and Beijing Falun Gong practitioner Xu Na, sentenced to 8 years, is currently serving her sentence in the Third District of Beijing Women's Prison
Rights Defense Network Information Center reported on September 21, 2026, that Xu Na, a former 1989 student and Beijing Falun Gong practitioner, is serving an eight-year sentence in the Third District of Beijing Women’s Prison. Police arrested her on July 19, 2020, after she posted domestic pandemic photos. She was sentenced in January 2022 and transferred to the prison in late September 2023.
