On April 2, 2026, this outlet learned that Lawyer Li Guobei had successfully met with Lawyer Yu Kai.

Although Lawyer Li Guobei was obstructed by various parties and was reportedly even summoned for questioning by two police officers by telephone, she ultimately succeeded in meeting him. Lawyer Yu Kai, who is being detained, specifically asked that his “sincere thanks and best wishes be conveyed to fellow lawyers and friends from all sectors of society who have shown concern and support in various ways. Apart from the poor accommodation conditions, everything else is fine. Please rest assured!”

Lawyer Yu Kai, director of Shandong Xiaolin Law Firm, publicly held up a sign in front of a judicial department on March 26, lodging a real-name complaint against Deng Huanli, director of the Qingdao Municipal Justice Bureau. The content of the sign directly accused Deng Huanli of allegedly “abuse of power, bending the law for personal gain and failing to transfer criminal cases, and the crime of having unexplained sources of huge amounts of property.” On March 27, when Lawyer Yu Kai was taken away by police, the reason given by police was “disrupting public order.” Lawyer Yu Kai was subsequently criminally detained and held at the Beijing Xicheng Detention Center. The criminal detention of Lawyer Yu Kai has drawn widespread attention from all sectors at home and abroad. Lawyers from the China Human Rights Lawyers Group believe that Lawyer Yu Kai was peacefully exercising his constitutional right to freedom of expression by holding up the sign, and that Beijing police should immediately release Lawyer Yu Kai and restore the image of the rule of law in the capital.

This outlet will continue to follow Lawyer Yu Kai’s situation.
