(Rights Defense Network Information Center report) On March 26, 2026, this outlet learned that Tibetan monk Tsekha Gyatso, who was detained, was tortured in prison and has nearly lost his sight in both eyes.

According to a recent report by Voice of Tibet: Tibetan monk Tsekha Gyatso was tortured and has nearly lost his sight in both eyes. On July 2, 2025, Tsekha Gyatso, a 48-year-old monk from Shitsang Monastery in Tongde County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, was detained by police in Xining on suspicion of “remitting money overseas.” He was released six months later, on January 2, 2026. However, torture during his detention and prolonged exposure to bright light caused his eyesight to deteriorate, leaving him nearly blind, and resulted in persistent knee pain. Although he has now been released, the authorities are closely monitoring his every move.
