Tibetan political prisoners Gangji Zhuba Jia and Gang Tsering Dolma subjected to abuse in prison, health conditions continue to deteriorate

(Rights Defense Network Information Center report) On April 23, 2026, this website reposted [Voice of Tibet report of April 21, 2026]: Tibetan writer Gangji Zhuba Jia and Tibetan woman Gang Tsering Dolma from Serthar County, Tibet, who were sentenced to lengthy prison terms by the Chinese Communist authorities in 2022 on charges of “separatism,” were recently reported to have suffered prolonged torture and abuse in prison, resulting in physical and mental health problems and raising concerns abroad.

In March 2021, Tibetan writer Gangji Zhuba Jia from Serthar County, Tibet, was arrested by Chinese Communist police for writing and publishing several books and articles about the fate and situation of Tibet, and for establishing the “Anti-Red Organization.” In April of the same year, Tibetan woman Gang Tsering Dolma from Serthar was also arrested by the authorities for participating in peaceful protests in Serthar County. In 2022, the Chinese Communist authorities sentenced the two to 14 and eight years in prison, respectively, on charges of “suspected separatism and endangering national security.”

Recently, according to a report by the Tibetan exile media outlet Tibet Times, Gangji Zhuba Jia and Gang Tsering Dolma have suffered severe torture and abuse in prison, causing Gangji Zhuba Jia to develop serious mental problems, a sharp decline in his vision and memory, and severe deterioration in kidney and heart function. At the same time, Gang Tsering Dolma has also experienced declining memory, mental disorientation, and persistent pain in parts of her body.

The report said that the Chinese Communist authorities have ignored prison regulations requiring timely medical treatment for prisoners, leaving the health conditions of Gangji Zhuba Jia and Gang Tsering Dolma in critical condition.

It is understood that in 2024 Gangji Zhuba Jia was imprisoned at Serthar County Prison, and Gang Tsering Dolma was also imprisoned at Serthar County Prison. However, because the Chinese Communist authorities continue to transfer Tibetan political prisoners who have attracted international attention, the actual locations where the two are currently imprisoned cannot be confirmed.

Gangji Zhuba Jia

Gangji Zhuba Jia was born on August 6, 1981, in the Ranchung area of Serthar, Tibet. His father was named Thupten Nyima and his mother Wangtang Dolma. He and his wife, Wangshü Lhamo, have a son and a daughter.

Gangji Zhuba Jia was first arrested by the Chinese Communist authorities as early as February 2012. In 2013, he was charged by the Yajiang County People's Court with conducting activities related to Tibet and sentenced to five years in prison. The day after his release in September 2016, he was again detained for 17 days by the Serthar County police station after being accused of having a bad attitude for placing an image of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his head.

Gang Tsering Dolma

Gang Ciri Dolma was born in 1997 in the Dazegangtsa area of Serthar County, Tibet. Her father was named Solo and her mother Tsoji. She and her husband, Karma Wangshü, have two sons.

Beginning in 2008, Gang Ciri Dolma was repeatedly arrested and detained by the authorities for participating in peaceful protests in Serthar County with her father, Solo. Each time she was imprisoned, she was beaten by prison guards, causing her hip to be fractured. Even after her release, Gang Ciri Dolma's words and actions continued to be strictly monitored by the authorities. Whenever a sensitive anniversary approached, she had to report to the local police station and was prohibited from leaving her place of origin.
