Case Details and Profile of Zhang Yuzhen, a Falun Gong Practitioner from Dashiqiao City, Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, Sentenced to Nine Years
On August 23, 2026, this outlet learned of the case details and profile of Zhang Yuzhen, a Falun Gong practitioner from Dashiqiao City, Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, who was sentenced to nine years. The details are hereby reported as follows:
Zhang Yuzhen: A male Falun Gong practitioner from Dashiqiao City, Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, born in 1955 and aged 71 in 2026. He lives in Dongzhi Village, Yong'an Town, Dashiqiao City.
The Dashiqiao City Public Security Bureau subjected local Falun Gong practitioners to mobile-phone surveillance and tracking for as long as six months, and carried out a coordinated arrest operation on November 25, 2025. More than 20 police officers were deployed by the criminal police brigade alone.
On November 25, 2025, Zhang Yuzhen, his wife Gong Suyan (72), and their non-practicing son Zhang Bo were forcibly arrested and their home was ransacked after police broke into it. The abducted male practitioners were detained at the Dashiqiao City Detention Center, while the female practitioners were detained at the Yingkou City Detention Center. They were subsequently placed under criminal detention, and later formally arrested and prosecuted. Zhang Yuzhen's condition deteriorated rapidly during his detention. He developed multiple cerebral lacunar infarctions and became physically weak, ultimately being pushed into court in a wheelchair by police. His family and lawyer repeatedly made the reasonable request that he be “allowed to go home for medical treatment,” but the presiding judge and prosecutor completely ignored it.
On July 16 and 17, 2026, the Zhanqian District Court held hearings in the case for two consecutive days. On August 11, it issued the Criminal Judgment No. (2026) Liao 0802 Xing Chu 72, sentencing Zhang Yuzhen to nine years in prison and fining him 50,000 yuan. Sentence expires: November 24, 2034.

Chow Hang-tung: Statement of Plea
The author rejects a 206-page judgment that, they argue, treats belief in ending one-party dictatorship as unconstitutional and criminal. They say law cannot control thoughts, condemn obedience to authoritarian power, and describe ending one-party dictatorship as a responsibility of Hong Kong and Chinese people. The author refuses to apologize for these beliefs, accepts possible imprisonment, and vows to continue pursuing democracy, accountability for the 1989 massacre and a democratic Hong Kong and China.
