In 2003,because Hong Kong had experienced the SARS virus epidemic and the Basic Law Article 23 legislative controversy,the July 1 mass demonstration broke out,and although he was in Canada and did not participate,he began to develop the idea of entering politics from then on;when he returned to Hong Kong during the summer vacation,he was invited to join the “July 1 People Pile” organization(that is, 7.11 People Pile,a Hong Kong youth political discussion organization)and served as its spokesperson, with the aim of promoting Hong Kong’s democratic development and supporting a group of young people in participating in the 2003 Hong Kong District Council elections to counter the pro-establishment camp;
During the summer of 2004,he returned to Hong Kong from Beijing for vacation,and after learning that Audrey Eu was running for the Legislative Council’s Kowloon East constituency,he volunteered to become an intern with her campaign team;

In October 2015,the resignation of Tommy Cheung from his Legislative Council seat triggered a by-election in New Territories East,so the Civic Party announced on December 20 that he would run in the New Territories East by-election,and after a fierce contest, he was ultimately successfully elected as a councillor;it is learned that during the campaign for this by-election,his campaign slogans were “Hong Kong people, take the field!”、“Leung Chun-ying, step down!”、and “In turbulent times, greater responsibility”,but during the contest with the pro-establishment camp, the Mong Kok riots occurred in February 2016 in connection with an election march,in response, he wrote that “whether I win or lose is not important; I only care whether we can hold on to the key seat in the fight against authoritarian power”,and ultimately narrowly won election as the New Territories East councillor;
In September 2016,he again ran in the New Territories East constituency in the Legislative Council election, with the campaign slogan “Implement reform, reverse the future”,and successfully won re-election with a high number of votes;in 2016,he formally assumed the position of leader of the Civic Party and was re-elected in 2018。
In the 2020 Legislative Council election,he won in the pro-democracy camp’s primary election,but several days after submitting his winning nomination, on July 25, he and Lau Wai-hong and Helena Wong, who were running in the same constituency, simultaneously received letters from the constituency’s returning officer asking about their positions on multiple issues,only five days later, their winning nominations were declared invalid;on November 11 of the same year,the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress made a decision authorizing the HKSAR government to announce that he had lost his Legislative Council qualification on July 30, 2020;
On January 6, 2021,because his previous participation in the pro-democracy camp’s 「primary election」was accused of violating the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law, he was arrested along with dozens of others and became a co-defendant in the HK47 case;in February 2023,he was found guilty of 「conspiracy to subvert state power」among the defendants in the HK47 case;on November 19, 2024,the HK47 case was finally sentenced collectively at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts in Hong Kong,and although he had previously pleaded guilty, he was still given a heavy sentence of 5 years and 1 month in prison, with his sentence ending on March 28, 2026.
