On September 25, 2026, this site learned that Jia Pin, a Southern street movement activist and human rights defender sentenced to four years, was released upon completing his sentence on September 21, 2026. On September 22, 2022, he was arrested in Beihai, Guangxi, by Henan police who had crossed provincial boundaries; the authorities accused him of using circumvention tools to access overseas social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and of “spreading false information, provoking trouble, and causing serious disruption to public order.”

On September 8, 2023, he was sentenced to four years in prison for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” During this period, the outside world knew nothing about him.

JiaPinProfile: Born on April 3, 1989, he is from Henan Province, a rights-defending citizen, Southern street movement activist, and pro-democracy figure.

In his early years, he became a rights-defending citizen because he pursued the ideals of democracy and freedom. Later, he went to live in Guangdong Province for a livelihood and his ideals, and gradually became a committed Southern street activist; however, because he had long devoted himself to speaking out for democracy and human rights in China, he was frequently arrested, sent back, and detained by the authorities;

In 2013, he was detained by police for taking part in a rights-defense protest holding placards in Dongguan, Guangdong, and lost his job; he subsequently turned to “professional” rights defense and used his savings from years of work for rights-defense activities that he felt duty-bound to undertake;

On April 29, 2014, he went to Suzhou, Jiangsu, to take part in a commemoration on the anniversary of Lin Zhao’s death. He was arbitrarily detained by Suzhou police along with rights-defending citizens Zhu Chengzhi, Li Xiaoling, Ou Biaofeng, and others, and was later criminally detained by Guangdong police on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” because of his speech; after his release, he was repeatedly driven out by local police and sent back to his place of origin for living and speaking out in defense of rights in Guangzhou, Dongguan, and other cities;

On August 13, 2017, with the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party about to convene, he was again forcibly sent back to his hometown in Henan by Dongguan police on the grounds of maintaining stability;

On September 22, 2022, he was arrested in Beihai, Guangxi, by Henan police who had crossed provincial boundaries; the authorities accused him of using circumvention tools to access overseas social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and of “spreading false information, provoking trouble, and causing serious disruption to public order.” On September 8, 2023, he was sentenced to four years in prison for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” He was released upon completing his sentence on September 21, 2026.
