Case Details and Profile of Ms. Zhang Shuxiang, a 77-Year-Old Falun Gong Practitioner from Zhaoyuan, Shandong, Sentenced to One Year
(Information Centre for Human Rights Defence report) On March 22, 2026, this outlet learned the case details and profile of Ms. Zhang Shuxiang, a 77-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Zhaoyuan, Shandong, who was sentenced to one year. They are reported as follows:
Zhang Shuxiang: A female Falun Gong practitioner from Zhaoyuan, Shandong, born in 1949 and aged 77 in 2026. On August 14, 2024, Zhang Shuxiang was arrested by police from the Linglong Branch of the Zhaoyuan Public Security Bureau while she was promoting Falun Gong at a market. Because Zhang Shuxiang had multiple fractures, the Yantai Detention Centre refused to accept her, and she was forcibly placed under “residential surveillance.”
On December 17, 2025, the Zhaoyuan Municipal Court held a trial for Zhang Shuxiang. Because of her poor health, she was unable to attend court. In late December, the court sentenced her to one year in prison and fined her 6,000 yuan.
In mid-January 2026, the Linglong Branch of the Zhaoyuan Public Security Bureau, under the pretext of conducting a “medical examination,” forcibly took the 77-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Shuxiang, who was bedridden as a result of the persecution, from her home to the Yantai Detention Centre. She was subsequently transferred to Shandong Women's Prison to continue serving her sentence. Her sentence runs until January 2027.

Chow Hang-tung: Statement of Plea
The author rejects a 206-page judgment that, they argue, treats belief in ending one-party dictatorship as unconstitutional and criminal. They say law cannot control thoughts, condemn obedience to authoritarian power, and describe ending one-party dictatorship as a responsibility of Hong Kong and Chinese people. The author refuses to apologize for these beliefs, accepts possible imprisonment, and vows to continue pursuing democracy, accountability for the 1989 massacre and a democratic Hong Kong and China.
