(Rights Defense Network Information Center report) On October 16, 2026, this publication learned that on the morning of October 15, 2026, Xu Weiping, a rights defender from the Economic Development Zone of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, posted several videos at a Route 56 bus stop beside Nanjing Railway Station. In the videos, Xu described how the Changzhou government had illegally and violently demolished her lawful home 19 years ago and had failed to provide resettlement and compensation in accordance with the law. She also saw police cars and officers from the Changzhou police, her local police force, present and stopping her. Xu questioned the Changzhou police’s conduct in coming to Nanjing to intercept her petition.

It is understood that Xu went to Nanjing this time to report to the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau for Letters and Calls, the provincial public security department, and other agencies that the local Changzhou government had illegally demolished her lawful home 19 years ago and had yet to resolve the matter; that she had pursued her rights in accordance with the law, but instead of resolving the problem, the government was dealing with the person who raised it; and that it had directed the police and petition authorities to repeatedly crack down on, suppress, and unlawfully intercept her lawful rights-defense efforts, among other issues. At the Route 56 bus stop in Nanjing, officers from the Public Security Bureau of Changzhou’s Economic Development Zone abducted her, put her in a vehicle, and took her back to Changzhou. She has been unreachable ever since. Xu’s family said they had also received no information from the public security authorities about how the matter was handled.
