Appendix: Jia Pin’s resume: Born in 1989, a native of Henan Province, rights defender, Southern street movement activist, democracy activist, and political prisoner held in China.
He became a rights defender in his early years because he pursued the ideals of democracy and freedom. He later went to Guangdong Province to live for his livelihood and ideals, and gradually became a committed Southern street activist; but because he had long devoted himself to speaking out for democracy and human rights in China, he was frequently arrested, repatriated, and detained by the authorities;
In 2013, he was detained by police and lost his job after participating in a rights-defense protest holding up placards in Dongguan, Guangdong; he subsequently turned to “professional” rights defense and used his accumulated savings from years of work to engage in rights-defense activities that he felt deeply obligated to undertake;
On April 29, 2014, after going to Suzhou, Jiangsu, to participate in a memorial event on the anniversary of Lin Zhao’s death, he was arbitrarily detained by Suzhou police along with rights defenders Zhu Chengzhi, Li Xiaoling, Ou Biaofeng, and others. He was later criminally detained by Guangdong police on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” because of his speech; after his release, because he lived in and spoke out for rights defense in cities including Guangzhou and Dongguan, he was repeatedly expelled and repatriated to his native place by local police;
On August 13, 2017, as the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was about to convene, he was again forcibly repatriated to his hometown in Henan by Dongguan police under the pretext of maintaining stability;
On September 24, 2022, on the eve of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, he was forcibly taken away across provincial borders by Henan police, who arrived while he was visiting a friend and handling affairs in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The charges were unclear. He has been out of contact ever since; more than 3 years have now passed, but he remains in a state of forced disappearance. His current place of detention is unknown.
This website will continue to follow Jia Pin’s situation.
